Why is it that there is such disparity in people’s degree of success, happiness, and enjoyment of life?  There are no simple answers and I am sure there are a variety of contributing factors for these differences.   But one reason, that I want to discuss today is “but.”  It is a word that sometimes is an excuse; it is oftentimes a limiter; and it is in many cases simply not true.  Think about it in the following situations: you are talented, you are smart, and have a wealth of potential “but” the doctor gave you a life altering diagnosis.  You have a great heart, a nurturing way with friends, and an incredible ability to minister to people’s needs “but” your spouse left you and the void in your being grows larger my the minute.  You are viewed in your community as a person with creative ideas and valuable insights “but” you were recently lost your job of 20 years due to budget cuts.

You see how it goes.  The overshadowing cloud of doubt gathers steam as we increase our use of that word “but.”  In other words – I have God given potential, I could be a great parent and spouse, I could make a difference in the lives of others “but.”  There it looms.  That little word keeps me from all that God has designed me for.  Why? Fear – intimidation – insecurity.

Your spouse needs you – all of you.  Your children need you, their parent, to be fully present.  Your friends want your companionship.  “But” – NO!  God is bigger than your pain and difficulties.  He is more powerful than any limiting diagnosis or circumstance.  The scriptures say it is imperative that “we believe that He is (that He exists) and that He rewards those who diligently seek Him.”  Maybe that is the issue today – we are fearful and limited because we have not sought Him with the core of our being.  By seeking Him and resting in Him, we become much more available to our spouse and our family.  Maybe today we need to use this word differently – I would be an inept partner, an inadequate parent, a wimpy employee, and a pathetic friend “but” God!  In that statement is no limitation but life-changing power!
