It is one of those days.  On your way to work there was an accident that backed traffic up for two miles.  Then, once you got to work, things weren’t much better.  Two of your employees were out sick, last night’s orders were never entered into the system, and the toner on the copier is empty.  And wouldn’t you know it, the only person who knows how to replace the toner is one of the two people out sick.  The rest of the day went pretty much the same.

By the time you get home from work, you are fried and there is not much left of your frazzled nerves.  Now it is time for dinner with your spouse and the kids.  How do you hold it together and not take your stress out on those you love?  Report.  What?  Report.

A growing body of research has discovered that when family members report out on their day, the family is strengthened.  And not just the negative things, the positive too.  Family members are able to benefit in two ways when such daily sharing takes place.  First, both children and spouses learn how to navigate the ups and downs of daily stressors by watching how other family members deal with it.  Secondly, reporting the day’s activities helps family members to build empathy and solidarity with each other.  It is extremely supportive to learn and know that those you love and care about you, have your back.

So, if you and your family want to grow as well as be supported, this week try this simple tip of sharing with each other the highs and lows of your day.  You may discover a whole new level of strength.
