A few months ago my wife and I had the opportunity to see Trans-Siberian Orchestra.  The lyrics of one particular song towards the end of the show caught my attention.  The chorus said, “Sleep, don’t turn away.  You are the safest way into tomorrow.”

Certainly after a hard day, sleep can be both welcoming as well as renewing.  And with that, morning looks better with a fresh start and new opportunities. As a matter of fact, the Bible states that God’s mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22-23).  God knows that a night of sleep can help “clear the deck” of burdens and emotional clutter from the day.  It can provide us the chance for tomorrow with a clearer head and a fresher perspective.

With that said, I want to suggest a slight modification to the thoughts of the song lyrics.  While sleep is essential, and I want to sleep without difficulty (don’t turn away), I would suggest that my faith in the one who is the author of sleep is even more important.  While sleep is indeed beneficial, it is the God of the universe who is truly my “safest way into tomorrow.”
