The functions of kissing were the subject of a recent study.  Researchers wondered what is it about exchanging saliva that couples find desirable.  As a part of nearly every culture in the world, kissing has been found to be a great source of information gathering.  Now while that may sound strange, think about it.  You draw close to the other person, you learn about their breath, lips, teeth, and hygiene.  I know – dissecting kisses like this kind of takes the romance and mystique out of it.

Aside from what you may learn about the person whom you are kissing, this exchange also is linked to reinforced feelings of trust and intimacy.  It is a part of the bonding process in a growing relationship.  The study found that in a six week period, those who increased their kissing time by a mere 15 minutes displayed lower cholesterol readings, reduced stress, and an overall improvement in their relationship quality.  Conversely, those who didn’t increase time kissing had elevated levels of the stress hormone cortisol.

So, what’s the tip?  Kind of a no-brainer actually.  Kiss your mate more and in turn experience better health, lower stress, and an improved relationship.  Now who wouldn’t want those benefits?  The best parts are – it’s fun, it’s free, and it’s easy.  So, try this simple exercise – finish reading this and go kiss your spouse – repeat as often as possible for maximum benefit.  Have a good week.
