On a past Valentine’s Day, a California based film editor gave his wife a journal.  His thinking was that they could take turns writing to each other.  They found that they both enjoyed this process.  As a matter of fact, his wife expressed the excitement that she feels when she notices that he has replaced the journal on the shelf; “I know there’s a love letter waiting for me.”

I am aware of other couples who use writing as a way to communicate love on a daily basis to their mates.  It may be sticky notes left on the bathroom mirror, loving texts that come through when they know their spouse is in a tense meeting, or, as one couple has related, spouses who write each other love notes on napkins and place them in each other’s work lunch.

What is it about “writing” that is so powerful?  I believe, in part, it is because when you write something down, it becomes more concrete – it becomes real.  Also you can quickly tell your spouse you love them, but writing it takes an extra moment or two.  And that extra effort says, “You were thinking about me – and I like knowing that.”

So, as you contemplate ways to communicate your love this week, consider creative and loving ways to take an extra minute and write those thoughts down.
