I recently found myself in a discussion with a client rearding the future. He is trying to make some plans regarding his health, travels, and long-term living arrangements. He also raised end of life issues. The conversation ran several different direct
But I couldn’t help but notice the intensity with which he looked at all the details of the next 10 or 20 years, and how little attention he gave to what happens after this life. When that topic came up, he admitted that he had given it little thought. In general, he believes in God, but he really wasn’t sure why? His family of origin just kind of accepted the idea of God, but they weren’t sure why either.
I found this interesting and so I inquired as to whether he believed that the Bible was God’s Word. He said, “I don’t know. I suppose so, but I’ve never read it.” I have to admit that boggles my mind a little bit. It reminds me of a humorous Woody Allen quote, when he says “Eternity is a very long time, especially towards the end.” Of course, there is no end to eternity.
This discussion was a reminder to me regarding where I put my attention. Am I more interested in planning next summer’s vacation than I am in being prepared for my future beyond this life? I may live 70, 80, or 90 years on this earth. While I certainly want to spend time with my wife, kids, and grandkids, even more importantly, I want to spend eternity with those people that I love as well.
I guess my question is – Where does my focus make the biggest difference – Now or Later – or both? Something to ponder on a Monday Morning.
