Relationships Tip Tuesdays

Couples have many decisions to make about everything imaginable. From the wedding venue to the paint color for your first baby’s room. From how late Johnny can stay out to play to what kind of car we are going to buy. Lots and lots of decisions.

We have certainly had periods in our world history when men made all of the decisions and the women just had to grit their teeth and live with them. Fortunately, that has changed.

I was reminded of this last summer. We are moving – downsizing – and we had a house built. Before the ground was even broken, we were in the design center, picking out everything from flooring, counter-tops, and paint colors, to appliances and cabinets. They allow an entire day for this process.

I watched with intrigue, as other couples were making their selections. I couldn’t help but ask,  the young woman working with us, “Do couples ever come in here and wind up in a divorce.” Smiling, she indicated that it can get interesting at times. The problem occurs most often when two people want to both call the shots. That rarely works. Fortunately for me, I am well aware of where my strengths are as well as my weaknesses. I know that my wife has a keen decorating eye. I know if I like something or hate it – otherwise, I defer to her. Now, when it came to internet connections and sound system wiring, my wife is lost and defers to me.

I appreciate the Apostle Paul’s words when he says, ”Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.” Ephesians 5:21

This is wise advice, and it works. We were out of the design center by 1:00 pm.
