I wonder – what are the ways you make a difference? You may be thinking, “I don’t know – I just go to work to make a living.” But is that all you really do? My guess is that whether you are a nurse, a teacher, a forklift operator, a CEO, or mechanic – whatever you do, you have the opportunity to make a difference.
My wife and I recently moved to a new neighborhood, where they are building tons of new homes. The little boy in me comes out as I love to watch the building process. Whether I am watching the framers, the roofers, or the guys pouring concrete. I am watching men make a difference for those for those who will live in those houses.
But what about when you when you are no longer in the workforce (you notice I didn’t say retired). What do I do then – lay around and watch reruns of “M.A.S.H”. all afternoon? I certainly hope not. Unless you are physically unable – God has something in store for you.
I have numerous friends who have retired – but they really haven’t. They have just changed titles – usually without pay. Some examples – I know a retired school superintendent who has volunteered to be trained and work in a hospice setting; an ex-attorney who no longer wants to file briefs but has a desire to train a therapy dog; Grandparents who relieve some of the daycare dilemmas of their kids and gladly babysit a couple of days a week; a retired psychiatrist who provides services to the indigent in a downtown clinic one day a week – for free; and the same goes with a friend who is a retired eye-doctor; and a retired firefighter who volunteers multiple days a week to work with inmates in prisons.
Remember – no matter where you are in life – God wants to continue to use you to Make a Difference!
