“Am I a gerbil?” “What kind of question is that?” you may be thinking. Of course you’re not a gerbil. But I wonder if you might be exhibiting gerbil like qualities.
Comedian Jeff Allen, who I wrote about recently, was talking with his wife about their gerbil. He said, “Watch it. It gathers up sticks on one side of the cage and brings them over to the other side. Then when that’s done, he repeats the process and brings them back to the other side. Every now and then, he spins that wheel for entertainment.” She responded with “So what?”
He continued, “That’s our life.” “I go to work and make some money. We buy some things, and they wear out. We take them to the landfill. If I am lucky, I land a sitcom or movie deal, and we get to buy nicer things, but eventually they all wear out and we take them to the landfill. Every now and then we take the kids to Disneyland or go to Vegas – that’s our wheel of entertainment But in the end, it always leaves us empty.”
For too many of us, how we live our lives may not be that different from how the gerbil, or the comedian, lives his. But the good news is, it can be! God did not plan for our daily routines to become simply a stick moving task. He means for our lives to be full and abundant with his mercy and grace and His purposes coursing through our DNA. Would you like this for your life? His arms are open wide, waiting for you to come and relax into His embrace.
