Comedian Jeff Allen writes about his journey from a meaningless to a meaningful life. He tells of one incident when he got caught up just watching their gerbil. He told his wife, “Watch it. It gathers up sticks on one side of the cage and brings them over to the other side. Then when that’s done, he repeats the process and brings them back to the other side. Every now and then, he spins that wheel for entertainment.” She said, “So what?”
“That’s our life!” “I go to work and make some money. We buy some things, and they wear out. We take them to the landfill. If I’m lucky, I land a sitcom or movie deal, and we get to buy nicer things, but eventually, they all wear out and we take them to the landfill. Every now and then we take the kids to Disneyland or go to Vegas – that’s our wheel of entertainment. But in the end, it always leaves us empty.”
He goes on to say that as he looks ahead at his life for the next 15 to 20 years, all he sees is “gathering sticks.” Have you ever felt that way? That all you are doing is gathering sticks?
Even wise King Solomon talked about how meaningless life can be and says it is like “chasing after the wind.” This doesn’t paint a very hopeful future.
However, I would suggest, if you know the King of the Universe, the Creator of all that is – you gain an entirely different perspective of life, its meaning, its excitement, its purpose, and its joy you can begin to experience NOW! If you are in a dry place, you will never fully extract yourself from it. But there is One who can, if you will simply humble yourself and run to Him. Thoughts?
