Mondays Matter

After a long day or exhausting week at work, it is so very easy to become a couch potato – binge watching on “Shark Tank” and eating more cookies and chips than is good for us. I know, because I’ve done it too. Maybe it’s time to take inventory, clean out the cobwebs in our brains, and stimulate our minds to better health.

So, with that goal in mind, here are some suggestions.

  • Be Bold and try new things. This is especially important as we age. It is easy to get stuck in what we safely know. But in doing so, our brains can get lazy.
  • Start walking or any form of exercise that gets you moving. One doctor says that exercise makes you brain bigger and helps it to function more efficiently.
  • Try some healthy eating swaps. Maybe instead of reaching for the M & M’s, when wanting a snack, we can grab a piece of fruit instead. I know that sounds easy, but trust me – I live the struggle.
  • Be aware of your sleep clock. For the best sleep hygiene, doctors continue to recommend that regardless of whether you naturally go to bed early or late, keep your sleep times the same – even on weekends.
  • Connecting with God regularly helps to re-center our minds as well as relieve stress.
  • Humor is both good for the body and good for the brain.

While these are probably not new information items to you, if you are like I am, we need the reminders to avoid simply defaulting to old ineffective patterns. I encourage you to adopt some of these strategies, clean out the cobwebs, and stimulate some brain growth today.
