Mondays Matter

Well, I am pivoting on what I was going to write this morning. Why? Because of my grandkids.

My wife and I have six grandkids, ages 10 and under. Four of them live in Colorado while the other two live on the east coast. Fortunately, we get to see the Colorado crew all the time. As a matter of fact, we just had three of them here for the weekend.

I am writing this in the middle of July, while the kids are on summer break from school. The two older grandkids, on the east coast, will sometimes Facetime because they enjoy connecting with us – and that happened this morning. Since they are two hours ahead of us, they will sometimes call on the earlier side, but that’s OK too.

This morning they called as I was fixing breakfast, and we talked throughout breakfast. As I needed to get ready for the day, I asked if I could call them back in an hour. Which I did. We talked about things they were both doing, exploring their imaginations, complete with pictures and drawings.

After a while, I felt the pressure of the day. The work I had to do – beginning with this post. But then I was convicted. You see, getting work done is good. Nothing wrong with that at all. But then I thought, “I will get these things done – if not this morning, then this afternoon. Or if not this afternoon, then tomorrow. But while getting this written is good, hanging out with my grandkids on Facetime is better. The chance to cultivate those relationships and influence their world is a privilege that I must not take lightly. My wife is better about this than I am. But I am learning.

There is Good, but then there is Better. I want to do my best to reach for the Better.
